velogical repair
thermistor replacement
recently my velogical light suddenly went out. i wasn’t sure what was wrong. i cut the wires to the thermistor and then just used a multimeter to figure out if charge was being generated. after i was able to use multimeters to determine that the dynamo was still producing current (i attached a battery and measured current on either side), i just replaced the thermistor, and now we’re back in business. i was able to order a replacement thermistor relatively cheaply by ordering a replacement from the velogical folks.
troubleshooting process:
- attach a battery to a circuit going through each component
- each component should have current on either side of the circuit measured by a multimeter
- check the dynamo, thermistor, and light circuit separately
- test them together
generating the right voltage/wattage with the dynamo by hand is difficult though, so i found it was easiest to turn the bicycle over and then hold the dynamo to the edge of the wheel to get it to spin fast enough (or, if you’re fancy enough to have a power bench…)
two notes:
- also, when measuring the voltage, make sure you are on ac.
- the thermistor should have a resistance of between 0.4 and 0.6 ohms
storage
- rack: tubus logo classic (57.3lb limit)

i tried following the loose instructions from rivendell bikes, where grant petersen goes over shellacing cotton grips with twine. it turned out to be easier than i thought, and i really like how they look.
